5–7 Day Acadian Peninsula Road Trip Itinerary (New Brunswick Guide)
Looking for a 5 to 7-day Acadian Peninsula road trip? You are in the right place.
We spent several days exploring this part of New Brunswick, and to be honest, it ended up being one of the most peaceful and underrated areas of our entire trip. It’s not as talked about as the Bay of Fundy, but once you’re there, you realize how much there is to see and experience.
This route is ideal if it’s your first time visiting New Brunswick, if you only have one week available, or if you want to stay closer to the border with Quebec to reduce travel time.
If you have more time, you can also check our full guide: 20-day New Brunswick road trip itinerary: The Most Complete Guide, where we cover the entire province at a slower pace.

Overview of This Acadian Peninsula Road Trip
This 5 to 7-day New Brunswick itinerary follows a one-way road trip through the northern part of the province, including the Acadian Peninsula. You’ll be covering approximately 495 km, with mostly short driving days, so it feels very manageable, even if you’re new to road trips.
If you have more time, you can start in Edmundston and turn this into a 7-day itinerary. If you’re shorter on time, you can begin in Bathurst and follow the 5-day version.
The route ends in Neguac, and one of the best parts is that distances are short, especially once you reach the Acadian Peninsula. Most towns are within 20 to 30 minutes of each other, which makes this a very relaxed and easy road trip.

We’ve included a map below so you can easily see this Acadian Peninsula road trip and adjust it based on your time and travel style.

Acadian Peninsula Road Trip Itinerary (5–7 Days)
Stop 1 – Edmundston (Optional – Day 1)
If you are driving from Quebec, Ontario, or Maine, Edmundston is a great place to start your trip.
That’s exactly what we did, and it worked really well as an entry point into New Brunswick.
You can spend one day here walking across the Bernard-Valcourt bridge, exploring downtown, and visiting the New Brunswick Botanical Garden located inside Parc de la République.

If you enjoy hiking, there are also great options like the Sentiers des Prospecteurs and the Madawaska trails.
If you’re travelling in an RV, you can stay at Parc de la République or use Harvest Hosts like we did and stay at the local casino.
One day is usually enough here, but it’s a nice, easy start to the trip.

Stop 2 – Mount Carleton Provincial Park (Optional – Day 2&3)
From Edmundston, it’s about a 1.5-hour drive to Mount Carleton Provincial Park.
This was one of our favourite stops in New Brunswick. We recommend staying at least two nights here.
It’s a beautiful and remote place, and something important to know is that there is almost no cell service. If you need internet, there is one area inside the park where you can grab a coffee and connect, which honestly helped us a lot.
If you enjoy hiking, you’ll love this place. There are several trails with different difficulty levels. We did the Mount Carleton hike, and it ended up being one of the best experiences of our trip. We would definitely come back to try the others.

Even if hiking is not your thing, you can still enjoy this stop. You can walk by the lake, relax at your campsite, or bring a kayak or paddleboard if you have one.

Stop 3 – Bathurst (Day 4)
From Mount Carleton, it’s about a one-hour drive to Bathurst.
Bathurst is not a big city, but it has a really nice, relaxed feel. You can walk around downtown, explore a few local shops, and stop by a brewery if that’s your thing.

We recommend visiting Daly Point Reserve for coastal views and walking along Youghall Beach.
We stopped at Kaffeine for coffee and also enjoyed the local brewery scene. It’s a simple stop, but a good transition before heading deeper into the Acadian Peninsula.
Stop 4 – Caraquet (Day 5)
On your way from Bathurst to Caraquet, make sure you stop at Pokeshaw Rock.
There’s a small entrance fee, and then you can walk down to the beach and see the rock formations up close.

Once you arrive in Caraquet, the atmosphere shifts. It feels more coastal, more cultural, and slower in a good way.
You can walk around Carrefour de la Mer, visit Bas-Caraquet Beach, and stay for the sunset.
If you have time, we highly recommend visiting the Acadian Historical Village. It’s a really interesting place to learn more about the culture and history of the area. You can read more in our full guide Is The Acadian Historical Village Worth Visiting? A First-Timer’s Guide

Stop 5 – Shippagan, Lamèque & Miscou Island (Day 6)
This was one of our favourite days of the whole trip.
Start your morning driving to Shippagan, which is only about 30 minutes from Caraquet.
Walk along the boardwalk near the lighthouse and stop by the Shippagan Wharf. It’s one of those spots you’ve probably seen photos of, so of course we had to take our own picture too.

From there, continue to Lamèque Island and then to Miscou Island.
In Lamèque, you can visit the Ecological Park of the Acadian Peninsula. It was closed when we were there, but it looked beautiful and worth stopping if it’s open.
Keep driving until you reach the Miscou Island Lighthouse. You can go up for a small fee, and we highly recommend it. It’s one of the few lighthouses where you can actually step outside at the top and feel the wind.
On your way back, stop at the Sentier des Tourbières in Miscou. This walk through the bog landscape is very unique and completely different from anything else in New Brunswick.

At the end of the day, you can stay in Shippagan or continue to Tracadie.
Stop 6 – Tracadie, Neguac & Hay Island (Day 7)
Tracadie is a quieter stop, but still worth passing through.
The church downtown is hard to miss and very impressive from the outside. If you have time, you can also visit the local museum.
From there, continue driving about 30 minutes to Neguac.
We stopped at Richelieu Park to take a photo with the oyster sign, and nearby there is a tourism office where you may be able to access water if needed.

Then continue to Hay Island.
This ended up being one of the most memorable stops for us. The boardwalk, the lighthouse, and especially the sunset made it one of the most beautiful moments of our entire trip.
If you have extra time, you can continue to Miramichi, which is only about 30 minutes away.
RV Travel Tips for the Acadian Peninsula
We found this area very RV-friendly.
There are several places where you can stay overnight, including free options. We used a mix of iOverlander and Harvest Hosts throughout this route.
Caraquet and Hay Island were some of our favourite spots for overnight stays.

Dump stations were also easy to find. We used Caraquet and also found water access in Neguac at the tourism office.
Best Time to Visit the Acadian Peninsula
Summer is definitely the best time to visit.
We had the chance to visit in July, and we truly believe it’s the ideal season because:
- Festivals are in full swing. We arrived just as Shippagan’s celebration was starting, and everything looked beautiful and decorated.

- The weather is warm and inviting, perfect for swimming, hiking, and enjoying long days outdoors.
- If you can plan your trip in August, it’s even better. August 15 is National Acadian Day, the biggest celebration of Acadian culture. The entire region comes alive with music, parades, and community gatherings.
Tips for Driving This Route
One of the best things about this road trip is how short the distances are.
- Once you reach the Acadian Peninsula, most towns are within 20 to 30 minutes of each other, which makes the trip feel very relaxed.
- Road conditions are excellent, and everything is well marked.
- We recommend filling up gas in Bathurst or Caraquet just to be safe, especially if you’re travelling in an RV.
Who Is This Road Trip Best For
This Acadian Peninsula road trip is perfect if you enjoy slower travel.
It’s ideal for people who prefer small coastal towns, quiet places, and less crowded destinations.
If you’re travelling in an RV, this route works really well.
Conclusion
This part of New Brunswick was one of the biggest surprises of our trip.
It’s quiet, beautiful, and feels very different from the more popular areas of the province.
If you’re looking for something slower, more local, and a bit under the radar, this Acadian Peninsula road trip is absolutely worth adding to your plans.
