7-Day New Brunswick Itinerary: Bay of Fundy Road Trip Guide

In this 7-day New Brunswick itinerary, we’ll walk you through a road trip focused on the Bay of Fundy, one of the main highlights of the province and one of the most unique coastal areas in Canada.

This route is ideal if it’s your first time visiting New Brunswick, if you only have one week available, or if you’re renting an RV or a car and want a clear, easy plan to follow.

This 7-day New Brunswick itinerary follows a one-way road trip along the Bay of Fundy, starting in Saint John and ending near Cape Jourimain.

You’ll be covering approximately 323 km, with short to moderate driving days, making it a very manageable route even if you’re new to road trips.

The focus here is not to rush, but to experience the coastline, small towns, and some of the most iconic natural attractions in New Brunswick.

7-Day Bay of Fundy Road Trip Itinerary Map

Stop 1 – Saint John (Day 1 & 2)

Saint John is the only city in New Brunswick located directly on the Bay of Fundy, and it’s the perfect place to start this 7-day New Brunswick itinerary.

We recommend staying here at least two days so you can explore without rushing.

One of the main highlights is the Reversing Falls, but timing is everything. Make sure you check the tide schedule before you go, because the experience changes depending on the time of day.

Another place we really enjoyed was Irving Nature Park. It’s a large natural area where you can walk, have a picnic, or just take in the coastal views. There are trails, a beach, and plenty of space to explore.

On your second day, spend some time in Uptown Saint John. Walk around the streets, visit the City Market, and try a few local spots. We found a really nice vegan restaurant there, which was a great surprise.

If you’re up for a bit of movement, we highly recommend walking or biking up to the Saint John sign and Fort Howe National Historic Site. We went up to see the sign and ended up spending time around the historic fort area. You can see old cannons and get a wide view of the city and harbour. It’s one of the best viewpoints in Saint John.

Another great spot is Rockwood Park. It’s large, easy to explore, and works well whether you want to walk or bike. There is also a campground inside the park, which can be convenient if you’re travelling in an RV.

Stop 2 – St. Martins Sea Caves & Fundy Trail Parkway (Day 3)

On this day, we recommend dedicating your time to one of the highlights of this New Brunswick itinerary 7 days: the Fundy Trail Parkway.

On your way from Saint John, you can stop at the St. Martins Sea Caves. Depending on the tides, you’ll either be able to walk around them or see them partially underwater. When we visited, they were mostly underwater, so we just enjoyed the view from a distance.

Then continue to the Fundy Trail Parkway.

This is not a drive you want to rush. We spent almost ten hours here and honestly could have stayed longer. There are scenic lookouts, short hikes, and incredible coastal views along the way.

At the end of the day, we recommend staying inside Fundy National Park (book in advance if you’re travelling in high season).

Stop 3 – Alma & Fundy National Park (Day 4-5)

After a full day on the Fundy Trail Parkway, this is where you slow down again.

We recommend staying at least two nights around Alma and Fundy National Park.

Alma is a small coastal town with a very relaxed vibe. It’s often used as a base to explore the park, but it’s also worth walking around and taking in the views by the water.

Fundy National Park has a lot to offer, and having two days here makes a big difference. You can go for hikes, explore waterfalls, bike through the trails, or simply take a slower day to rest.

After the intensity of the Fundy Trail Parkway, this stop will be needed.

Stop 4 – Hopewell Rocks & Moncton (Day 6)

From Alma, head to Hopewell Rocks, one of the most iconic stops on this 7-day New Brunswick itinerary.

Timing is everything here.

We recommend checking the tide tables in advance so you can experience both low tide and high tide if possible.

We stayed around six hours, which gave us enough time to walk on the ocean floor at low tide and then come back later to see everything covered in water. It’s honestly one of the most impressive natural experiences we’ve had.

After that, drive to Moncton.

One of the most unique things to see here is the Tidal Bore. This is when the incoming tide creates a wave that travels up the river. It might sound simple, but it’s actually really interesting to watch.

There’s a designated viewing area, and usually a sign showing the exact time, so you can plan around it.

You can also walk or bike along the river, which is a nice way to end the day.

Some people also visit Magnetic Hill, where cars appear to roll uphill due to an optical illusion. We didn’t try it, but it’s an option if you’re curious.

Stop 5 – Shediac & Cape Jourimain (Day 7)

For your last day, you can either stay in Moncton or take a short drive to explore the coast a bit more.

We recommend heading to Shediac, a small seaside town about 25 km from Moncton.

Shediac is known as the lobster capital of the world, and one of the main attractions is the giant lobster statue, which makes for a fun and classic photo stop.

The town has a relaxed coastal feel, small shops, and waterfront areas that are nice to walk around, especially in the summer.

We’re vegan, so we didn’t stop for seafood, but we did find a vegan ice cream spot.

If you have time, you can continue to Cape Jourimain, where you can see views of the Confederation Bridge connecting to Prince Edward Island. It’s a beautiful place to end your trip.

RV Tips for This Bay of Fundy Route

We found this route to be very RV-friendly overall.

For overnight spots, we used a mix of iOverlander and Harvest Hosts, which worked really well.

Some examples:

• Walmart (Saint John): convenient location, but a bit noisy due to the nearby train
• Witness Wellness (Harvest Hosts): we didn’t stay overnight, but we did book massages and had a great experience

We stayed one night at Rockwood Park Campground in Saint John. It worked for what we needed, but to be honest, it wasn’t our favourite. The sites were small, close together, and didn’t offer much privacy.

The main reason we stayed was because the dumping station fee was high, so it made more sense to stay overnight and use the facilities. Next time, we would probably just pay to use the dump station and move on.

For dump stations, we recommend using Fundy National Park, which was much more reasonable.

Best Time to Visit the Bay of Fundy

For us, summer is the best time to follow this 7-day New Brunswick itinerary.

Everything is open, the weather is warm, and the days are long, which makes a big difference when you’re exploring.

One very important thing to keep in mind is the tides.

Many of the main stops on this route depend on timing:

• Hopewell Rocks
• Tidal Bore in Moncton

The Bay of Fundy has some of the highest tides in the world, and planning around them will completely change your experience.

Tips for Planning This Trip

This road trip will cover approximately 323 km, and while distances are not extreme, it’s still important to plan ahead.

• We recommend filling up gas in Saint John before heading further along the coast, as stops become smaller and less frequent.
• Driving times are generally manageable, but it’s easy to underestimate how long you’ll want to spend at each stop, especially along the Fundy coast.
• If you’re traveling in the summer, make sure to book campgrounds in advance, especially in places like Fundy National Park.
• And most importantly, always check the tide schedule when planning your days.
